This job vacancy is for a "business application centric" System Administrator position. It is a leadership position, giving close support to City departments to maintain and improve their utilization of a variety of diverse and unique business applications. These business systems may include Public Safety and Police Systems, Utilities Billing, Sales Tax, Asset Management or other business application software critical to the City of Arvada's mission of delivering world class service to the public. The successful candidate will have a unique blend of hardware and software skills and experience, combined with strong team oriented and interpersonal competencies.
Provide variety of complex technical and/or professional work activities in support of the business applications. Undertakes work which requires the understanding of the fundamental principles to support and troubleshoot application computer systems (e.g., public safety, finance, courts, ticketing, and constituent management). Recommends and implements system additions and upgrades as necessary to assure optimum system performance, deliver innovative, reliable, secure and trouble free technology experience to our customers.
JOB FUNCTIONS / SCOPE OF AUTHORITY:
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
•Service Operation- System Software
◦Evaluates new system software, reviews system software updates and identifies those that merit action.
◦Ensures that system software is configured to meet service objectives.
◦Plans the installation and testing of new versions of system software.
◦Investigates and coordinates the resolution of potential and actual service problems.
◦Ensures that operational documentation for system software is fit for purpose and current.
◦Advises on the correct and effective use of system software.
•Service Operation- Application Support
◦Drafts and maintains procedures and documentation for applications support.
◦Manages application enhancements to improve business performance.
◦Advises on application security, licensing, upgrades, backups, and disaster recovery needs.
◦Ensures that all requests for support are dealt with according to set standards and procedures.
◦Shares responsibilities for ensuring optimal database performance with Database Administrator.
◦Works with Database Administrator to ensure all files and data storage areas are configured and sized to provide for optimal user access within the parameters of system hardware.
•Service Operation- Problem Management
◦Ensures that appropriate action is taken to anticipate, investigate and resolve problems in systems and services.
◦Ensures that problems are fully documented within the relevant reporting system(s).
◦Coordinates the implementation of preventative measures by analyzing patterns and trends.
◦Takes responsibility for understanding client requirements, collecting data, delivering analysis and problem resolution..
◦Identifies, evaluates and recommends options and implementing if required.
◦Collaborates with, and facilitates stakeholder groups.
◦Seeks to fully address client by ensuring that proposed solutions are properly understood and appropriately exploited.
◦Demonstrates a respectful attitude towards customers and coworkers that promotes teamwork, open communication, and effective customer service.
◦Maintains an in-depth knowledge of information technologies and provides expert advice regarding their application.

•Customer Service Support
◦Receives and handles requests for service, following agreed procedures.
◦Promptly allocates calls as appropriate.
◦Logs incidents and service requests and maintains relevant records.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
•Working knowledge of the theory, principles, practices and methods of computer programming and system analysis.
•Working knowledge of relevant standard business applications.
•Working knowledge of system application administration, relational database administration, computer networks and network operating systems, interaction of applications with networks, SQL, Oracle, MS Windows Server, Active Directory and system interfaces.
•Working knowledge of common hardware platforms, computer networks and end-user devices.
•Ability to analyze complex projects and move forward with minimal direction or supervision.
•Ability to encourage and motivate colleagues to share.
•Ability to prioritize daily work tasks and change as necessary to accommodate business needs.
•Ability to effectively present and offer innovative ideas, new methods, trends and solutions to the advancement of the organization.
•Understanding of the concepts of ITIL version 3.

SCOPE OF AUTHORITY:
Receives general supervision under the direction of the business systems manager. Plans daily work activities and prioritizes tasks. Few precedents and/or procedures are readily available. Originates and develops very complex ideas in new and undefined areas which have an impact on a major segment of the organization. Defined procedures utilized include: Standards for customer service, information technology department policies and procedures, city policies and procedures, employee handbook, purchasing guidelines, and organizational values.
Makes recommendations to supervisor for budget allocations that pertain to area. Approves expenditures up to a certain amount.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT / QUALIFICATIONS:
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
The work environment/physical activities described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.
Work is primarily performed in an office environment with low/moderate noise levels. Physical effort and activities include: Occasional exposure to excessive noise and cold generated by computer room air conditioner. Requires moderate physical activity with handling of objects up to 50 pounds occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, LICENSE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE):
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field. Five (5) years' experience in supporting relational database applications and/or System Administration required. A combination of education and experience may be substituted for a degree.
Public Safety technical systems experience.
MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:
Requires use of a wide variety of system tools that may include: Desktop PC, Linux and Windows Server operating system.. Software utilized includes: Google Apps, Microsoft office Tools, Oracle and MS-SQL database tools, , various off the shelf Business System Software, xASS tools, Point of Sales systems, troubleshooting tools.
