IT Systems Engineer (Mid to Senior Level) -

Sierra Cybernetics is seeking an IT Systems Engineer with at least 5 years experience to work for us at our government client’s office in downtown Santa Ana. This is estimated to be a 6+ month assignment with potential to hire by the City. You will be responsible for system design, operation, and maintenance; engineering processes and procedures; research server hardware and software requirements; support VoIP environment; research, test and recommend IT technology; handle the day-to-day technical administration of the Information Technology systems infrastructure.

All candidates will be considered, although the ideal candidate will have knowledge in VMware, Storage Area Networks (SAN) - preferably HP 3PAR, SAN protocols (iSCSI and Fiber Channel), and working with bare metal servers - installing, configuring, maintaining, upgrading, etc.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Responsible for all functions relating to the planning, design, installation configuration and operation of the technology infrastructure.
• Administers the day-to-day operations of the physical servers, virtual servers, data storage and VoIP environment; receives alerts, checks logs and verifies operational status; investigates and repairs server system issues or remediates critical issues while researching to provide permanent solutions; classifies, investigates, troubleshoots and diagnoses systems problems until resolved.
• Responsible for ensuring that the Systems and VoIP infrastructure runs efficiently without interruption.
• Researches systems hardware requirements; recommends hardware and software upgrades; works with vendors to identify the most cost effective and appropriate solutions to meet the City’s needs.
• Recommends best current technology to implement for projects based on business requirements; researches, tests and deploys new software and hardware.
• Monitor systems performance to determine whether adjustments need to be made, and to determine where changes will need to be made in the future.
• Operates network management tools to analyze system inventory, configuration, changes, events, security, logs and errors.
• Maintains and upgrade equipment hardware and software
• Assists with change, security, availability, capacity and continuity processes
• Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Strong knowledge of principles, practices and methods of system engineering and maintenance, including procedures for establishing network connectivity, is required
• Strong knowledge of current Windows Server technology and Active Directory is required
• Knowledge of the theories and principles regarding server and workstation virtualization, cloud computing, and storage area networking (SAN) is required
• Knowledge and experience in server, network and application performance monitoring and performance problem resolution planning and execution is required
• Knowledge and experience with VoIP infrastructure (preferably ShoreTel/Mitel) design concepts, administration and integration is required
• Knowledge of basic principles and practices of system analysis is required; familiarity with network architecture and basic theory and principles of network design is required
• Knowledge and experience with VMware and virtualization is required
• Ability to problem solve, troubleshoot and provide excellent customer service is required
• Knowledge and experience with Exchange e-mail systems is desired
• Knowledge of IT security concepts and best practices is desired
• Knowledge and experience installing SQL server is a plus
• Knowledge of Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity is a plus
• Knowledge of Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is a plus
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Good organizational skills
