2019 Tech Salaries - Where do I fit?

Popular tech staffing site has released their annual 2019 Tech Salary Report  recently and the results are not exactly what you think. Procomport has taken the time to analyze these results and assist you on making the best decisions related to your tech career.

It's all about the Benjamins?... not really

According to the report "70% of tech professionals would take the same job with a different company for as little as a 15% salary increase" Simply put in tech money isn't the only driving factor in attracting talent, contrary to popular belief money doesn't bring happiness in the workplace but working conditions and personal growth do. Tech professionals are at the forefront of an ever evolving scene, new products, software, services, and companies pop up all the time so you'll have to try a bit harder to woo over potential employees than offering a fatter paycheck. Certain perks like flexible schedules and employer provided training are a start in this article it's proven that "52% of tech pros would take a pay cut to work remote more often" which is pretty remarkable, think of it half the work force would take a pay cut to have the flexibility of working from home. Hopefully employers will look at this report and implement such practices in their benefits packages, it's also a good thing to look for as a job seeker because it's a very good indicator on how invested a company is in their employees.

But... what about the Benjamins?

In the report it was found that over 2018 wages for tech professionals didn't go up by much money wise but the benefits they did get were significantly better. Overall in 2018 the increase in average salary was only about a +0.6% change compared to a +0.7% change from 2016 to 2017. Now if you're going to go straight for the big bucks in the report the top 3 paying skills are
  1. Golang - The Go Programming Language
  2. Kafka - Distributed Steaming Platform - For real-time data feeds.
  3. Amazon DynamoDB - High availability database.
Learn any of these 3 skills and guarantee you'll be in the $120k+ a year bracket. As for location, well if remote working is out of the question the top 3 cities in the US to work in tech are.
  1. Silicon Valley - (No surprise there)
  2. Seattle, WA
  3. San Diego, CA
All 3 cities according to the report boasting an average of greater than $100k a year for tech professionals.

Some of you may be wondering after our most recent post, why were some jobs considered better than others. We know that it takes more than a fancy title to get you to fill out an application. There are so many elements of choosing of job. In order to choose a position that is just right for you, you need to know a few stats and background information. Have no fear, we have provided a little more details about each position to make your job search – that much easier.


Coming in at the tenth on the list, the computer programmer position has barely made it on the list at all. Due to outsourcing, many companies are saving money in this department by hiring programmers from other countries. The median salary for this position is $60,842 and the unemployment rate is 3.5%.

With an average wage of about $23.00 an hour, a network and computer systems administrator makes at least $10,000 more than the computer programmer. The median salary for this position is $82,000 with the highest paying jobs located in these three California cities: San Jose, San Francisco and Oakland. The unemployment rate is at 3.1%.


Eight would be great, if this was Myspace – then a computer support specialist would be at the top of the list! Though the median salary is less than that of a computer programmer, $17,280 to be exact (the median salary is $62,250), there are more jobs available for this position. Between that same period of 2014-2014, unlike that of a computer programmer, the job market is set to expand and create at least 88,000 more jobs. TAKE THAT – computer programmer.


We are moving on UP and I can tell cause the money is getting longer. We are almost in the six figures with this one. The median salary for an information security analyst is $90,120$. Also, in similarity with the eight listing, the job market is expected to expand between 2014-2014. There is a projected increase of at least 14,000 more jobs within the said time frame. What a time to be alive!


We will just continue to more in the onward and upward motion with our 6th entry. The upward motion for this position lies in between the years of 2014-2024, there is an 11% projected increase in the job market. A steady growth like that will cause on estimate at least 13,400 more jobs by 2014. Yet, the downward motion comes in comparison with the information security analyst because the median salary for this position is only $81,710.


We are halfway through the list now and things are looking great! This is the first job on the listing that has stepped into six figures! The median salary for the computer network architect $100,240 and the job market is only looking to grow. Between the years of 2014-2024, this profession is growing at the rate of 9%, which will cause an increase of 12,700 new jobs!


This may be a shocker, coming in at the fourth best technology job, but the median salary for this position is only $64,970! That is a huge pay cut in comparison to the computer network architect, yet the web developer still ranks higher. The reason for this is because during in between the years of 2014 – 2024 with an estimated rate of growth at 27%, there are an estimated 39,500 new jobs to be had by 2024. I see a promising future for the web developer.


The highest median salary on our list goes to the IT manager. The median salary for the IT manager is $131,600. This one is all about the Benjamin’s! With a little help from the ever-growing and changing health care industry, which will assist in the growing IT market, there is an estimated 53,700 jobs that will be filled by 2024.


WE NEED YOU GUYS NOW! In current high demand, we have go the software developer coming in as the second best tech job out there. With a median salary of $98,260 being a software developer doesn’t sound too bad. Not to mention, out of all listed occupations, this one is growing the fastest. There is a projected growth of 135,300 jobs that will be filled from 2014 to 2024.


Though a software developer sounded like the best option out there, we all know that almost just doesn’t count. Let’s see how the number one tech job on the market stands out against the rest. Despite not having the highest numbers, due to the range of skill needed to fill this position, the computer systems analyst has ranked in at number one. With a median salary of $85,800 and 118,600 new projected jobs by 2024, this position still does not have the best numbers. Yet, with a 21% rate of employment growth, this position is said to grow quicker than your average!

The straight forward way to get a job.

Firstly you need to have a resume, that is essentially your passport into HR, without it you won't even be considered as a candidate. has provided a really in-depth YouTube video on what is defined as a "good" or "bad" resume and can be found by going here. A few minutes on Google or YouTube will do you wonders in learning anything from resume building to professional networking.

Professional Networking?

Professional networking is a big deal nowadays, according to a survey over 90% of employers will use social media recruiting in 2012 (Source). So in order to stay afloat in today's job market you need to start networking, primarily by using LinkedIn - The world's largest professional network. You can sign up for a free profile and professionally network with job recruiters and other professional people, think of LinkedIn as your online resume when a physical copy is not an option which allows you to market your past work experience, skills, education, and even personal achievements.

Phase 2: Get up early - with a plan, and apply.

The early bird not only gets the worm, but the bread too.

Most job postings happen during normal business hours, because logically that's when people work. When you're searching for work that doesn't mean that you are "off work", your occupation just changed so no more sleeping in or all the postings you see online may be irrelevant. Typically it's best practice to get up around 6AM to find fresh job postings, and around 2 and 3PM the postings die down and replies start getting less likely. At that cool down period that's when you check sources like news paper classifieds, local businesses, and even local job placement agencies. Additionally around this time it's the mid-afternoon slump, no one is going to want to respond to emails, nor answer calls, that's when you go in with a refreshing face and start handing out resumes.

Responding to emails.

One thing you have to know is how to properly respond to emails, email etiquette is essential to getting your foot in the door when submitting online applications. Firstly avoid all slang and abbreviation, no lol or ttyl, and do not abbreviate things that do not need to be abbreviated or make up your own abbreviations. If you are applying for an IT job you may know what RODC, DNS, DHCP means but the HR representative may not have a clue. Your friendly neighborhood software company Microsoft has an old yet extremely relevant guide to proper e-mail etiquette. Furthermore before you send any e-mail you need to have a professional email, or won't cut it in a professional workplace, have you ever seen a CEO or anyone with a position of power with such an email? Keep it simple, is your safe zone, you can even do other variations of your name. Consider your email as an extension of you before an HR representative even sees you they see your email, wouldn't you want to be seen as, or

I have the etiquette down, but what do I say?

Responding to an email is not hard, firstly if there are any integrated instructions included in the post you are replying to actually do them, some postings require a cover letter, others require contact information on the top of the email as opposed to the bottom signature field, essentially read the directions before replying. Furthermore do not reply like you are writing an essay, there is no need for a thesis, topics, and analysis written in paragraph form, think of it like this write down how you would talk to the manager in person. (In properly worded sentences and phrases using proper Mainstream American English)

Here's an example of how to respond to a job ad on the internet.

Hello (Insert name here if available otherwise use company name, or Sir / Madam),

     My name is John Smith and I saw your post looking for (what ever you are replying for) and I thoroughly believe that I meet the qualifications for this position. I have attached my resume to this email for your evaluation and if you need to contact me please do so at (555) 123-4567 or I look forward from hearing back from you regarding this opportunity.



It's that simple essentially write how you would speak and the rest will flow. :D

No replies?

Not every email you send will get an immediate response, sometimes you will not get a response at all, do not get discouraged and keep applying and sending emails, applications, etc.  You may also like to check if all the information you submitted meets the requirements for the job you are posting for and that all of your information is up to date.

How to Setup Boot Camp on Mac

How to set up Boot Camp on a Mac by Lucas Saunders

I can't tell you how many times I have had people approach me for help with boot camping their Mac. This post will describe a step-by-step process how to install Windows 7 onto your Mac. In simple terms, Boot camp is a built-in utility that supports,  depending on your computer’s hardware and OS X version, Microsoft Windows XP SP2, Windows Vista, or Windows 7.  

How to get started

First off you need some requirements:
  1. An Intel-based Mac with a built-in or external USB keyboard, and a built-in trackpad or USB mouse.
  2. Mac OS X v10.5 or later.
  3. The latest firmware updates available for your Mac.
  4. At least 10 GB (for Windows XP or Windows Vista), 16 GB (for 32-bit Windows 7), or 20 GB (for 64-bit Windows 7) of free space on your startup disk (for the Windows partition).
  5.  Boot Camp Assistant, which is located in /Applications/Utilities/ . You can also open Launchpad and type Boot Camp Assistant in the search field.
  6. Supported Windows installation media. Boot Camp does not include Windows
  Second, you want to go ahead and back your computer up. I recommend using time machine (I love it). If any one has questions about time machine let me know and ill put up another tutorial for that.   Now that you are backed up, apple has been nice enough to have a boot camp manual Here Naturally... but I’d like to help make it all a little clearer.  

Step 1:

Go to finder and look up "utilities"     Go to finder and look up "utilities"                

Step 2:

Find Boot Camp Assistant and open it Find "Boot Camp Assistant"            

Step 3:

Select the option to add a Windows partition, select other options you need, and then click Continue.

Here are the other options you can choose:

  • If you want to install Windows from a USB flash drive and you have a Windows 7 ISO image, select the option to copy the image to a USB flash drive. If this option isn’tavailable, your computer doesn’t support installing Windows from a USB flash drive.
  • If you haven’t already downloaded the Windows support software for this computer, select the option to download it. In a later step, you’ll install the Windows support software on your Windows partition.

Step 4:

Follow the onscreen instructions for the options you selected. When you’re asked to create a partition for Windows you need at least 10-20 gigs of space for the software, but I would recommend at least 30-50 gigs.  

Step 5:

Insert your windows 7 disk or your usb drive and click install.  

Step 6:

Once the windows side starts up, follow the onscreen options until you are asked where to install windows.  

Step 7:

When you are asked where to install windows choose partition “BOOTCAMP” Choose partition “BOOTCAMP”            

Step 8:

Select drive options (advanced) Then choose format. Format "BOOTCAMP" partition            

Step 9:

Select next and your computer will restart on windows. Okay, now that you have boot camp there are a few things you need to know. Once installed your mac will only start on window’s side. The way to choose between the mac and windows side is to restart your computer. As soon as you hear the start up sound, hold the option key and the two partitions will show up on screen. Choose the mac side.   To make it so your computer starts on the mac side unless forced by this “option key restart” you have to go to your system preferences. Once there select your Mac OS X disk instead of the windows disk. Go down to the bottom and lock from further changes.   Lastly something I use is Quickboot. This is an easy way to switch from windows to mac and back again without restarting your mac. I’ll leave a link at the bottom for a free download.   Thanks!
